Published Illuminated

Hi everyone,

I successfully published my game Illuminated on itch.io.

Here’s the link to my publication page.

https://elluo.itch.io/illuminated

Here’s the link to the trailer on Youtube.

I quickly made this trailer and edited it using After Effects. It’s an awesome tool for making motion graphic or animation based videos.

For the publication process is fairly simple. I took several screenshots and added a few descriptions of my game. I also uploaded the zip file that contains the APP and EXE files.

Feel free to download my game if you’re interested in playing it! 🙂

Also, on The Play’s The Thing Day, it was really exciting to see other people playing my game and was interesting too to see how they were trying to figure out how to solve the puzzle I created. I felt really proud of myself afterward and felt I have accomplished something big this quarter. I’ve really appreciated the Professor for giving us this opportunity to showcase our works in this exhibition. I feel amazing seeing people interested in my game. I just want to say thank you to everyone who helped me before and gave me feedback so that my game can be improved and become a better one.

Thank you, everyone.  🙂

Illuminated

Hellooo everyone!

First, I want to say thank you to the professor for his help throughout this quarter. Without he helping me to debug my code, I wouldn’t have completed making my game. Also, thank you for you all’s feedback! I have learned a ton from you all not only by listening to your feedback but also by seeing all these great examples of games that you all made. I surprised by how different each game is and how many varieties of games we made.

My game, Illuminated, is an optical illusion game that provides players this unimaginable, amazing experience through the 3D illusion created in the game as well as the strong color contrast in each scene that achieves a visual impact. It’s a short game that is mainly targeted at providing an enjoyable experience to players. I wanted my players to enjoy the “journey”, rather than just winning the game.

I hope you all will enjoy playing my game! Feel free to comment below asking me questions about my game and giving me feedback so that I know where to improve next time. 🙂

Optical Illusion – Prototype B

Hellooo everyone!

This is my second prototype! I completely changed my mind from creating a 2D game to a 3D optical illusion game. Here are two pictures of my progress so far.

Here is the illusion I created in the game theme. I was inspired by the visual scene of Alice In Wonderland. I chose to create a red platform and used several game objects to make the overall visual look looks really geometric and unreal. It makes the players feel like they are in a different dimension of the world.

I have spent almost 5 hours each day for the past 3 days modifying this game. At the beginning, I wanted to create a 2D puzzle game. However, later on, I realized the visual look won’t look really good because I made it too simple and flat. After understanding the weakness of my game, I decided to make it 3D and create an optical illusion game which has beautiful illusional views.

I really enjoyed making this game because I guess I made it fun to play. However, sometimes somehow I feel I ran out of ideas, then I asked my friend for help and providing feedback on my game in order to improve it. So far, I asked my friend Erica for help and she provided me a lot of her great ideas for making my game a better one to play. I think it’s important for a game designer to get to know their players’ opinion about their game because it’s an important process of learning which part of the game needed to be fixed so that it can be smooth when playing.

Go ask your classmate “How do you think of my game”! I believe you can learn a ton from them!

Day of the Devs

Hi everyone,

I went to the Day of the Devs event and it was so fun!!!! This picture is me with my friend holding the map of the conference!!  I really like the design of the map because it’s really cartoony, colorful, and unique! I really like the design of each weird figure with their own unique identities that makes me think creatively because it would be really fun to design a game that has these weird figures in the game.

Here’s the picture of the CROWD watching the players playing the video game meanwhile they are also waiting in line to play this game. You can tell from this picture that how crowded the conference is. But, I am still glad that I made it to this event.

In the conference, I had played this game (showed the picture below). It was a really fun experience. This game is about four boneless figures fighting with each other and whoever dies the last will be the winner of the round.

I had played four rounds and lost 3 rounds……  Still, I didn’t regret playing this game because it made me keep laughing for at least 10 mins. It was really a fun game. In the fighting mode, boneless figures kept having weird postures because they are boneless. I really like the concept of this game and the scene of each round. This game is one of the most popular games in the conference. There’s another VR game which is also very popular. People waiting in lines to play the games they are interested in.

In summary, I had enjoyed this conference a lot and yes I will absolutely go back again next year. I love the overall atmosphere of the conference. It’s really crazy and fun. Also, I can tell that there’re a lot of passionate gamers were there in the conference. I can see the passion from the player’s eyes. It’s a wonderful event and should definitely be hosted again next year!

Pet Collector

Hi everyone,

For the project this time, I created this game called Pet Collector. I’m really into pets, such as cute kitties and puppies so I build this game just for my own preference. 🙂

Here’s the open scene of my game. I created this box of banner just to make this game look cute in order to attract gamers to play my game. I think it’s a funny and cute banner. I really like it personally, especially the part where the space cat in the hat is sitting on the ball.

In terms of the overall look, I like the color theme of my game because it’s really cute and cartoony. I’d spent a lot of time looking for cute images and finally found out these extremely cute pet’s image.

I love the part that every time when you get a pet, there will be a neon cat generated and flying across your screen. I think it’s an interesting idea but I personally wasn’t expecting that it’ll generate so many neon cats each time, resulting in blocking the player from clicking onthe pet food button. I should definitely fix the code to reduce the number of neon cats that are generated each time.

Last but not least, I should definitively increase the complexity of my game if you had more time to work on it. I like the graphics overall but the complexity and gaming difficulties should definitely be increased. The game rules are too simple and also it takes FOREVER to win this game. Because it takes 5 kitties to exchange for a puppy and 5 puppies to exchange for a human baby. So, how long it takes for you to exchange a unicorn?  You can do the math calculation then. 🙂

Surrealistic Randomly Generated Game

Hey everyone,

This is our 4th project – Randomly Generated Game Design. I was amazed by how many varieties the games we had designed for this project! I really like the games our classmate designed, such as Three Waves and Infinite Fitness. They are really cool and have the great concepts!

My game is unfinished so I just call it “Untitled”. My goal for this game is to create an unrealistic look in my game environment. Here’s the look of my game! The origin of my game concept is from Alice In Wonderland so I used this checker pattern plane as the ground for my game, and the ground and objects above the ground are all randomly generated.

In the process of making this game, I feel the hardest part is the technical aspects of the work. My code often doesn’t work exactly as expected and I also have a lot of problems with working in the Unity interface because I’m still not so familiar with all the tools. In every project, professor introduces us some new tools and code functions to build a new type of game. I think it’s cool but there’re so many things we need to learn for each project. I feel this class is constantly challenging me and pushing my boundary in terms of workloads and the complexity of each project. The biggest mistake we can make is to start the project a day before its due day because it takes so much time to build a game and you wouldn’t be able to finish it if you don’t start it earlier.

Go back to the topic of my game environment!

I really like how surrealistic and weird my game looks like, especially the flowing ponies. 😀 I’m glad I made the sky pink and chose to generate this weird type of trees so it looks unrealistic and unique!

Last be not least, I feel great seeing so many great examples of games created in this class. Each time it motivates me to work harder and to think creatively so that I can do better next time.

Also, now I noticed that each game we created has its own unique identity. I think this is great and really cool!

Woooo Finding Your Dreammate

Hi everyone, 🙂

I created this game called “Finding Your Dreammate.” I was inspired by the game Marriage – the one which the professor asked us to test play! I thought it would be cool if I can create a game that uses a similar concept but is presented in a different way. “Finding Your Dreammate” is a puzzle game that eating the right yellow square is the key to win this game.

There’re black squares representing players in the relationship that will either make you lose the game or waste your energy by shrinking the size of your character.

Here’s the winning message after you find your dreammate! 😉

In the process of making the game, I encountered a lot of bugs, error messages as well as the things that don’t work as I expected. I went to the office hours and ask for help from the professor. It was painful if you think your code and logic is correct, but the objects JUST DON’T WORK!!! I think it’s an important process for us, beginner coders, to learn how to code by keeping making a lot of errors and having the things that don’t work because they train us to think more logically and become better in coding over time.

Hope you like my game,

Elle

Puzzle Game

Hi everyone,

This is my second blog post! Hopefully, you enjoyed reading my first one! 😛

Here’s a screenshot of my text-based game. At first, my game set you in an empty dark room where you can only see a trace of light in front of you. I like this setting because it creates a mysterious feeling to the story. And you only have 3 options to choose in the beginning. They are “Stand up and walk around.”, “Go check the light to see where it’s from.”, and “Utter a loud call to see if anyone is in the room”. I like the beginning very much because it’s mysterious and the color theme matches the overall atmosphere created in the game.

However, I really need to work on the options for this game a lot more. Because I realized I have a great start of the story, I didn’t make more options to continue to tell the story. It seems an interesting start but has a bad ending.

For the Coding Part:

I had encountered a lot of bugs and syntax errors in the process of making this game. At the end, I had to ask the professor for help to debug my code. It’s an interesting process to see how we have a great idea in mind about the way we want our game to look like versus to think about how we actually need to code it, like turning it into the reality. We can have a great idea about the overall flow of the questions to the answers in the game. However, the game might be limited by our poor coding skill or technical skills (especially me :P) so it’s harder to perform well.

Here’s the screenshot of my code in the void update section…

Also, I was amazed by how other people made their games. I think it’s really creative and has a range of diversity. I think it’s really cool. I had a great time test playing their games. 🙂

My First Ever Game Design – Stairs Castle

This was my first time ever to design a video game by using this such complex software, unity. I had not only experienced a hard time figuring out the functionalities of each component in the interface, but I also felt frustrated, especially when I saw my First Person Controller wasn’t working the exact way I wanted to.

<Figure 1>
The image above (Figure 1) is the 3D model of the environment of my game. I created many cubes and modified their shapes to create the stairs in my game environment. I had also dowloaded a few 3D models of castle online so that the visual aspect of the environment can relate to the title of my game. I was inspired by a video game, called Monument Valley, so I tried to recreate its visual scene and make my game’s environment look abstract and geometric, just like how the game, Monument Vally, looks.

<Figure 2>

Figure 2 is the final result of my game environment. I like how colorful it looks and the stairs I made in the game. However, I would definitely increase its complexity if I had more time to work on it!

I was surprised that I had learned so much just by looking at games made by other students. Because we all have our own interested genres of game, we build and explore the types of game that is based on our own interests. In this class, I can hear different opinions from other students and know more about the types of game from the diverse perspectives. I think it’s a good way of learning and can help me advance the complexity of my game that I will be creating in my future classes.
