Doom first play through

For my write-up I will be sharing some general thoughts, then focusing on the “Phobos lab” level

I chose the difficulty “Hurt me plenty.”  Since this mainly effects the attitude of the monsters and ammo, I was happy picking this setting.  Monsters were frightening and engaging.

Generally, the game has a very good flow.  The player moves swiftly and the gets used to killing enemies effortlessly.

At times the game could be frustrating, like when I had killed all the monsters but couldn’t find a necessary key (see GIF).

Overall the game has a great design.  The colors all work well together, and the blue chosen is especially striking.  Horror elements like flashing lights are also well done.  The sound design has become a classic, and I now retroactive understand many online references that have come from its iconic sound and music.

PHOBOS LAB:

The player enters phobos lab to a shift in music.  It signifies the increase in difficulty.  The player is introduced to a new game element, the invisible monster.  These monsters come up frequently and are sprinkled in with the other monsters throughout the level.  The level ends with a completely dark room covered with enemies – a great instance of the games’ fantastic horror elements.

Doom Diary 1: First time playing Doom!

For this first playthrough of Doom, I had the game running on Steam, but I’m going to try to have it running on Chocolate Doom later so that I could have more freedom with changing my controls for the game. On Steam I had two control options.  In the first, you move with WASD and rotate with the left and right arrow keys. In the second you move with the arrow keys but strafe with period and comma. I ended up playing with the classic controls because I just felt more comfortable having easier access to rotate than strafe.

I’m not good at playing video games, so I wimped out and played on the easiest level, I’m Too Young to Die. I think I could probably do Hey, Not Too Rough next time, I was just scared on my first time playing. When I started to play the game, I made it to M3, then fell in some poison and died. I realized that the game doesn’t save any of your progress through each of the maps, so I had to start over in M1, but then I began saving after completing each map. In M4, it took me forever to figure out how to get the yellow key, but then I figured out that I can view a map of the area by pressing tab and that became very helpful. Then in M5, since I knew how to use the map, I started exploring all the doors and rooms and I found my first secret! A chainsaw.

Most of the levels have this blue orb with a face. I tried to figure out how to touch it but I couldn’t. What is it? What’s it supposed to do?

The last map felt unlike the previous ones, the floor textures were different, there were new bigger monsters and according to the game, I’m still stuck in hell 🙁

Week 1 My first doom experience

As a person who does not play FPS game and is not dexterous enough, I choose the easiest difficulty for my first Doom experience of the first level.  It turned out to be a good decision as after a summer holiday of The Witcher 3, I had a hard time to fight without dodge or fire. Also, spoiled by today’s graphic technology, I am not used to the graphics of Doom. The first thing I realized about Doom is that it is hard to keep balance as the view changed dramatically with the mouse. Also, the pixels also make finding path and realizing which direction should go difficult. I would say that a map will be necessary as I always stuck in a maze. The first several levels were short as I played in the easiest difficulty.  However, as I played the levels that involve black area, I was often trapped in the mazes. The elevator also confused me as I often unable to tell if I had went through this floor or not. I would summarize my overall first experience of Doom as dizzy, both physically and emotionally.

This is the level which I hd real difficult time to find the way out.
